Mini-HDMI connectors becoming reality

There are currently two types of HDMI connectors - Type A and C. The prototype Type D model has the same number of pins but is half the size of the Type A connector.

T&A: Following up on our previous report with regards to mini-HDMI connectors, Nikkei’s Tech-On! has reported that US-based Molex and other companies like Japan-based Yazaki Corp and Japan Aviation Electronics Industry, have prototyped mini HDMI connectors for use on compact gadgets like mobile phones and digital cameras. Japan Aviation is prototyping a connector for automotive use.

The mini-HDMI Type D connector has the same 19 pins as the current Type A HDMI connectors, but it’s half the size (or about the same as a micro-USB connector). It is also much smaller than the Type C HDMI connector. According to Tech-On, all of these connectors are prototypes at this stage, so expect compliant products to appear perhaps by the second half of 2009.

Considering that the Type D prototype connectors are about the same size as a Micro USB, designers have added features to ensure that users do not confuse the two when plugging them into ports. The plug end of the Type D connector is higher than the Micro USB receptable and the Type D receptable/port is narrower than the Micro USB plug.
